Are you making the most out of it? |
Reader, time is the one resource we all have in equal measure, yet it’s also the most precious because it’s finite.
Each of us has only so much time on this planet, and how we spend it defines the quality of our lives. To put it into perspective: if you live to be 70 years old, you’ll have approximately 613,200 hours in your lifetime.
Sounds like a lot—until you see where it goes.
Where Your Time Goes:
- Work: The average person spends 40 hours a week at work, totaling 2,000 hours a year. Over a 40-year career, that’s 80,000 hours—a massive portion of your waking life.
- TV/Streaming: Most people spend 20 hours a week watching TV or streaming platforms, adding up to 1,000 hours a year, or roughly 70,000 hours over a lifetime.
- Social Media: An average of 7 hours a week scrolling on social media totals 364 hours a year, or 25,480 hours in a lifetime.
- Traffic/Commuting: With the average commute at 1 hour a day, that’s 5 hours a week, or 250 hours a year—roughly 17,500 hours over a lifetime.
- Logistics (Errands, Cleaning, Cooking): The average person spends about 14 hours a week grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, and managing their home. That’s 728 hours a year and 51,000 hours in a lifetime.
- Unfulfilling Relationships: Many people spend 10 hours a week with people they don’t enjoy, adding up to 500 hours a year, or 35,000 hours over a lifetime.
These activities add up to 275,000+ hours—nearly half of your waking life—spent on things that don’t necessarily bring joy, fulfillment, or connection.
The Time That Truly Matters
Now, let’s look at what we tend to neglect:
- Meaningful Time with Kids: The average parent spends 90 minutes a day with their children, but much of that is spent on logistical tasks like homework, meals, or transportation. Only about 20 minutes a day is spent making meaningful memories like playing, exploring, or bonding. That’s just 7,300 hours in a lifetime—or less than 3% of your waking hours.
- Quality Time with a Partner: Couples spend, on average, 2-3 hours a week together in meaningful connection. Over a lifetime, that’s about 10,000 hours—a small fraction of your total time. This neglect of connection and intimacy contributes to the fact that we have the highest divorce rate in human history.
- Time Spent on Personal Growth and Joy: Many people spend 5 hours or less a week pursuing hobbies, passions, or personal growth—just 13,000 hours in a lifetime.
The Stark Contrast
When you add it all up, it’s easy to see why so many people feel disconnected from their loved ones and themselves.
We invest enormous amounts of time in work, screens, and logistical tasks, while giving precious little to our children, partners, and personal joy.
The Wake-Up Call
Imagine if you shifted just 10% of your time away from unfulfilling activities to focus on what truly matters.
What if you spent more time making memories with your children, connecting deeply with your partner, or investing in your own growth and happiness?
Time is the most precious resource you have. Once spent, it can never be reclaimed.
Take a moment today to audit your week. Where is your time going? Is it aligning with the life you want to live and the relationships you want to nurture?
Because when you take control of your time, you take control of your life—and create a legacy of joy, love, and connection.
Are you ready to shift just 10% of your time to what truly matters?
